Buffalo Butt

Legend has it that back in the 1840's, a group of cowboys hanging out at one of the many bars in Fort Worth's "Hell's Half Acre" would quench their thirst while telling tales of their buffalo hunting days. When one of the cowboys said a nice, cold beer was the only thing that could make him forget the often-viewed sight of a buffalo's butt, the local brewmaster laughed and vowed to create Buffalo Butt beer to commemorate the posterior of the prairie's most majestic beast.

Today, Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. continues this fine tradition with our own recipe for Buffalo Butt beer - a rich, amber lager that doesn't require months on a dusty trail, gazing at a buffalo's hindquarters to be enjoyed.

Recipe Information:

Style: Amber Lager
Alcohol By Volume: 4.5%
International Bitterness Units: 25
Color: Amber
Hops: Magnum, Strisselspalt
Malts: 2 Row, Melanoidin, Cara Munich, Carafa Special II
Tasting Notes: Caramel, Light Malt Sweetness, Spicy Hops

Serving Suggestions:

Preferred Glass: Mug
Preferred Serving Temperature: 45º
Food Pairings: Buffalo Butt pairs well with Cajun and Mexican food. Of course we also think it's the perfect beer to be served with a rump roast, but that's only because we've never really grown up.
Cheese Pairings: Monterey Jack, Gruyere

Any connection with the Yellow Rose (Great Grains of Dallas)? Would love to know if someone picked up the recipe for their Crude Stout & Vigilante Porter. I really enjoy the Summertime Wheat & Ugly Pug. Need to try more of yours, you brew some very tasty brews....

Actually the label is the same as the old Yellow Rose Brewery. A local restaurant here in Fort Worth bought the rights to the label and we are making the beer again. Not the same beer, but our rendition of it. Thanks for your support - Fritz Rahr
